The gene encoding MME is located on chromosome 3. MME is a zinc-dependent enzyme and is thought to down-regulate cellular responses to peptide hormones. On lymphoid cells, MME is expressed on immature T and B precursor cells but is lost as the cells reach maturation. MME is, however, re-expressed on proliferating B cells and mature neutrophils.
