  • Gene Introduction:
  • B-lymphocyte antigen CD19 also known as CD19 (Cluster of Differentiation 19), is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CD19 gene. CD19 is a 120 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein with a reduced Mr of 95 000 (1). CD19 is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily with two extracellular C2 type domains (2), and it is a critical signal transduction molecule that regulates B lymphocyte development, activation, and differentiation (1). CD19 expression is, besides its presence on follicular dendritic cells, restricted to normal and neoplastic B cells, being absent from T cells, monocytes, and granulocytes (2). The CD19 protein appears early during B cell maturation, probably at late pro-B-cell stage around the time of Ig heavy chain rearrangement. It then persists during all stages of B cell maturation and is lost upon terminal differentiation to plasma cells (2). The advantage of immunodetection of CD19 expression is that B linage leukaemias and lymphomas rarely lose the epitope (3). Expression of CD19 in some acute myelocytic leukaemia cells has been described (2).
