  • Gene Introduction:
  • Herpes Simplex virus is a widespread human pathogen. An HSV infection usually causes subclinic manifestations. However, it may develop generalised and fatal infection as in new-borns and immunocompromised people.1 Two types of HSV are serologically distinguishable: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both of them present biological as well as epidemiological differences. Although both viruses infect epithelial cells, HSV-1 is normally associated with oral infections and lesions above waist and HSV-2 is associated with genital infections and lesions below waist. However, a recognisable but variable proportion of genital infection is attributable to HSV-1, and the distinction in virus type is important as genital HSV-1 infections are not as clinically severe and are less prone to recur. Because of the strong serological cross-reactivity between HSV-1 and HSV-2, type-specific serological diagnosis has been technically very difficult. Nevertheless, the use of the purified HSV-2 glycoprotein G (gG2) allows to determine only HSV-2 type specific antibodies.2,3 The screening of all pregnant women and their sexual partners for HSV-2 antibodies would help to prevent primary maternal infections. It would also help to identify all women at risk for recurrent HSV-2 infection as well as asymptomatic HSV-2 seropositive mothers4,5 and to prevent neonatal infection.
