Hepatitis A is a faecal-oral transmitted infection which has become relatively rare in Western industrialized countries due to the high standard of hygiene. Western Europeans acquire this infection mostly by consuming contaminated food (especially clams) and beverages during travel to foreign countries in southern regions. This virus is highly endemic in many developing countries and the infection is acquired during early childhood. Viral excretion occurs via the faeces especially briefly before and during the onset of the illness. Transient viremia is also present during this period of time.
