  • Gene Introduction:
  • The infection with TBEV (tick-borne encephalitis virus) occurs predominantly in early summer through the bite of a tick, infected with TBEV. Ticks can become infected during any stage of their metamorphosis and transmit the virus diaplacentally. It is assumed that the virus hibernates in the tick or other vertebrates like porcupines, dormice, bats and deer. The incubation time ranges from 4 - 21 days. The viruses were earlier called arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses) and are combined by their function into a group of infectious pathogens, being transmitted between vertebrates by the bite of blood-sucking arthropods. These viruses replicate in the organs of the receiving arthropods, without causing symptoms of a disease or tissue damage. The cyclus vertebrate-arthropod-vertebrate is kept alive by this vector which becomes life-long infectious through the blood-sucking of a vertebrate in the viraemic phase. Today, TBEV is allocated to the group of flaviviruses.
