It combines many of the benefits of E. coli expression with the advantages of expression in an eukaryotic system such as protein processing, folding, and posttranslational modifications. Pichia pastoris is capable of metabolising methanol as the sole carbon source. The first step in the metabolism of methanol is the oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde by the enzyme, alcohol oxidase.
