It is a major constituent of the azurophilic granules of neutrophil granulocytes and is also found in the lysosomes of monocytes. In vivo, MPO catalyzes the formation of antimicrobial oxidizing and halogenating agents, e.g. hypochlorous acid from hydrogen peroxide and chloride ions. MPO is an important marker for myeloid cells, from the promyelocyte stage and to the mature forms.
