Infections in the newborn are the most common and are extremely serious. They are of two types. Early onset of infection, usually occuring within 5 days of birth, is manifested by bacteremia and pneumonia. This infection is contracted vertically, as the baby passes through the birth canal. The other type of infection is a meningitis that occurs between the 10th and 60th days of life.
