It is a major constituent of the brush border of epithelial cells forming absorptive surfaces in the microvilli of the intestinal and renal proximal tubular epithelia. In normal human tissue, villin is expressed by a limited number of simple epithelia of the gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. Among neoplasms, villin is predominantly expressed in tumors of colorectal origin. Antibodies to villin are useful in identifying malignant cells from primary and metastatic colorectal carcinomas. Villin expression has been reported in the majority of colorectal carcinomas, including both primary and metastatic tumors.
