This 65-70 kDa protein regulates insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) transcripts during embryogenesis and is later re-expressed in a proportion of neoplastic cells from various tumor types including lung squamous cell carcinoma and lung and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. IMP3 was originally identified during an analysis of differentially expressed genes comparing pancreatic cancer to normal pancreas. Subsequently, IMP3 was isolated using cDNA library subtraction and microarray technology as preferentially expressed in lung cancer compared to normal lung. IMP3 transcripts have also been detected in fine needle aspirates of patients diagnosed with colorectal and pancreatic carcinoma. mRNA expression was found to be minimal in many normal tissues using rtPCR and microarray analysis.
