Gene Introduction: CD57 is a carbohydrate antigen present on a variety of both haematopoietic and neuroectodermal-derived cells. The important carbohydrate component could account for the different molecular weights that have been attributed to CD57 when the molecule was immunoprecipitated from different cellular sources. In brain, the CD57 carbohydrate is associated with myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG), NCAM and other proteins. In blood, the proteins associated with the antigen have not been characterized in detail. CD57 is present on subsets of NK cells, CD8-positive lymphocytes, and on a small percentage of CD4-positive/CD45R0-positive T cells. In contrast, CD57 is not present on red blood cells, granulocytes, monocytes, platelets, cord blood lymphocytes, immature resting or activated thymocytes. In neoplastic tissues, CD57 is present in large granular lymphocyte leukaemia to various degrees. Further, CD57 is present in Ewing’s sarcomas, melanomas, neuroblastomas, neuroectodermal tumours, neurofibromas and small-cell lung carcinomas.
