CD23 is primarily expressed on B cells and monocytes including a strong expression on EBV-transformed B lymphoblasts. CD23 is also present on a large variety of other cells such as T cells, eosinophils, platelets, Langerhans cells and a subset of thymic epithelial cells. However, CD23 is absent in a large number of normal non-lymphoid human tissues, such as, central nervous system, endocrine glands, gastrointestinal, respiratory, urinary and female/male reproductive system, skin, bone, cartilage, connective tissue, muscles, peripheral nerves, vessels, mesothelium, synovium, placenta and umbilical cord.
