ANXA5 is known to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties. It also has a role in cytotoxicity. Due to its preferential phosphatidylserine (PS) binding property, ANXA5 has been used as a marker for the detection of apoptosis-undergoing cells. It regulates cell proliferation, signal transduction, and coagulation. In addition, it has been shown that the binding of ANXA5 to PS+ apoptotic cells can regulate the PS-mediated immunosuppressive clearance, thus enhancing the immunogenicity of apoptotic cells, including irradiated, apoptotic-tumor cells.
