  • Description:
  • The rat calcitonin (CT) ELISA Kit is used to quantitatively measure rat calcitonin concentrations in serum, plasma, or tissue homogenates. It performs well in important characteristics, including sensitivity and specificity. This assay is based on the sandwich ELISA mechanism and enzyme-substrate chromogenic reaction. The solution color develops proportionally to the amount of calcitonin in the sample. And the intensity of the color can be measured at 450 nm via a microplate reader. Calcitonin is a hormone secreted by the C-cells of the thyroid gland and mainly functions to lower calcium levels in the blood. It reduces blood calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclast activity in the bones and increasing the amount of calcium excreted in the urine. This hormone also prevents the absorption of calcium from the intestine, as well as increases the calcium absorbed by the kidney. When calcium concentration in the serum elevates, calcitonin is inducibly expressed and protects against the development of hypercalcemia. Calcitonin is also stimulated by gastrointestinal hormones such as gastrin. It is also an important tumor marker of thyroid carcinoma.
