Of the five immunoglobulin isotypes (IgA, IgD, IgE, IgG, and IgM), immunoglobulin A (IgA) is the second most abundant form of the total immunoglobulins in serum (1-3 mg/ml), being surpassed only by IgG (6-18 mg/ml). However, secretory IgA (sIgA) is the most abundant immunoglobulin in colostrum, milk and other secretory fluids. The relative abundance of the different isotypes is generally constant in mature adults. Changes in the relative abundance of the different isotypes usually indicate immunological disorders or disease states.IgA is considered the most enigmatic immunoglobulin isotype, but well known biological functions include modulation of inflammatory responses, inhibition of the mobilization of phagocytes, and mediation of the humoral immune defense at the mucosal level (mucosal homeostasis).
