The discovery and identification of hepatitis B surface antigen was a great stride forward in the knowledge and differentiation of viral hepatitis infections. The presence of HBsAg in serum or plasma constitutes the most important indicator for the diagnosis of a hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The enzyme immunoassay was first described by Engvall and Perlmann and van Weemen and Schuurs in 1971.
