It is found in large amounts in the prostate, and the concentration in seminal fluid is approximately 1 g/L. PAP is synthesized in the secretory epithelial cells in the normal prostate gland. The physiological function of PAP is not known. Chemically it hydrolyzes a wide variety of phosphomonoesters under acidic conditions and is inhibited by L-tartrate. These features make PAP belong to the group of tartrate-inhibitable acid phosphatases, which also includes lysosomal acid phosphatase. In highly differentiated tumours of prostatic origin, an abundance of cells are labelled by antibodies to PAP, whereas PAP-immunoreactive cells are less abundant in moderately (grade I) and poorly differentiated (grade II) carcinomas. The tumour cells of these grade I and II carcinomas also show a greater staining variability.
