  • Gene Introduction:
  • Human transferrin (hTf) is a single chain, glycosylated protein (MW = 79,570 Da) that is synthesized in the liver and transported into the plasma. A normal adult has about 14 grams of transferrin, about half of which is found in the plasma at a concentration of about 2.5 mg/ml. The remaining half is distributed in the body among a wide variety of fluids, such as cerebrospinal fluid, lymph, amniotic fluid, milk, saliva, tears, seminal fluid, and urine. Each transferrin molecule has two high-affinity iron binding sites, but which may also bind other metals. The most important function of transferrin is to transport iron from the intestine, liver, and reticuloendothelial cells to different tissues requiring normal growth and development. In addition, transferrin also maintains the crucial role of maintaining the desired levels of free iron in body fluids by disposing of excess iron and sequestering dietary iron when needed. Excess iron in the blood can facilitate the occurrence of a variety of diseases, including cirrhosis, congestive heart failure, diabetes, and cancer. Therefore, an accurate quantitation of transferrin in plasma, serum, and other body fluids is important for medical diagnostics, as well as for monitoring the efficacy of treatment regimens.
