Gene Introduction: | Protein gene product (PGP 9.5) is a cytosolic 24.8 kDa protein belonging to the ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase subclass. It is highly expressed in vertebrate neurons and neuroendocrine cells, where it constitutes 1-5% of the total soluble proteins. PGP 9.5 has been demonstrated in pituitary adenoma, medullary carcinoma of thyroid, pancreatic islet cell tumour, paraganglioma, neuroblastoma and carcinoid tumours from a variety of sites. PGP 9.5 removes ubiquitin from other proteins and protects them from degradation by proteases. |
