The causative agent is a genetically stable RNA virus, which belongs to the genus rubivirus within the family of togaviridae. Human beings are the only known natural hosts for the rubella virus. The nucal and retroaurical lymph nodes are swollen, and a moderate enlargement of the spleen is observed.
